Marcellus and Utica Rig Count Holds Steady at 33 as National Activity Rises
Drilling activity across the Marcellus and Utica shale plays held unchanged at 33 active rigs for the third straight week through September 18. Meanwhile, the nationwide rig count rose by four to reach 595, setting a new 52-week high. Domestic oil and natural gas prices supported overall growth nationally, while Appalachian operators maintained disciplined production levels.
Why it matters: A flat regional rig count indicates steady but cautious drilling activity, directly influencing when leased acreage gets drilled and generates royalty income.
Natural Gas Futures Decline Amid Mild Fall Weather and Export Facility Downtime
Natural gas commodity prices dropped heading into late September as cooling weather softened residential demand across major markets. Planned annual maintenance at export facilities like Cove Point LNG is also temporarily curbing takeaway capacity. The shift points toward larger inventory additions in storage ahead of the winter heating season.
Why it matters: Lower benchmark natural gas prices directly trim monthly royalty checks and can soften near-term lease bonus offers across West Virginia.
Natural Gas Futures Rebound Past $2.90 on Higher LNG Demand
Natural gas futures recovered sharply on Friday, climbing back over $2.90 after an early decline. The rebound was supported by rising feedgas demand as Cameron LNG resumed operations, countering cooler late-September weather forecasts.
Why it matters: Higher benchmark natural gas prices help support commodity pricing and royalty payouts across West Virginia producing wells.
Natural Gas Futures Fade Following Weekly Storage Report
Natural gas futures saw an initial boost following a smaller-than-expected weekly government storage injection report. The smaller build signaled tightening national gas inventories, though purchasing momentum weakened later in the trading session.
Why it matters: National natural gas futures movements directly affect regional pricing benchmarks and subsequent monthly royalty payments for West Virginia mineral owners.
Natural Gas Futures Climb Following Bullish Storage Data
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a weekly storage injection of 44 billion cubic feet, coming in below historical averages and market expectations. Natural gas futures strengthened in response to the tightening supply-demand balance. The smaller inventory build provided upward support for near-term commodity prices.
Why it matters: Higher natural gas futures prices generally support better monthly royalty payouts and strengthen drilling economics across West Virginia producing basins.
Natural Gas Futures Slide Back Below $3 Mark as Shoulder Season Looms
Natural gas prompt-month futures dropped as an attempt to surpass $3.00 per MMBtu failed. Weakening demand typical of the autumn shoulder season continues to pressure near-term contracts despite recent warm temperatures.
Why it matters: Depressed natural gas benchmark prices directly reduce the monthly royalty payments West Virginia mineral owners receive on active production.
Natural Gas Futures Trade Below $3 as Markets Fluctuate
Natural gas futures on the NYMEX edged higher at midday but stayed pinned beneath the $3.00 mark. Traders continue to weigh conflicting fundamental drivers, leading to choppy, range-bound price action. Broad market uncertainty has kept near-term price momentum restrained.
Why it matters: Sustained sub-$3 natural gas futures can temper monthly royalty checks and slow leasing activity across West Virginia.
Tetco M-2 Gas Price Dips Below EQT Shut-In Threshold
Spot natural gas prices at the Texas Eastern M-2 hub fell to an average of $1.435 per MMBtu in mid-September. The drop pushes regional pricing below EQT Corporation's target threshold of $1.50 for temporary production curtailments. Lower seasonal demand often leads Appalachian operators to choke back production until winter demand returns.
Why it matters: Depressed regional gas prices and operator volume curtailments directly reduce monthly royalty distributions for mineral owners across West Virginia.
Natural Gas Futures Gain on Late-Summer Weather and Stronger LNG Flows
Natural gas futures edged higher to start the week, buoyed by warmer weather outlooks and stronger feedgas intake at LNG export terminals. Despite the uptick, intraday prices failed to push through key technical resistance points. The market remains in a broader technical downtrend as traders weigh late-season cooling demand against national storage levels.
Why it matters: Natural gas benchmark prices directly impact monthly royalty check calculations and drilling activity levels for West Virginia mineral owners.
Natural Gas Futures Edge Up on Strong LNG Exports and Late-Summer Heat
Natural gas futures moved higher on the NYMEX as traders responded to strong liquefied natural gas export demand. Domestic production held steady while lingering heat in southern states sustained power sector consumption. Overall market sentiment reflected a balance between export momentum and seasonal weather shifts.
Why it matters: Higher benchmark natural gas prices generally lead to increased monthly royalty checks and support operator drilling activity across West Virginia.
Drilling activity across the Marcellus and Utica shale plays held flat at 33 active rigs for a second straight week. Nationally, active drilling rigs increased by three to reach 591 total rigs, breaking a multi-week plateau. The steady regional rig count indicates disciplined producer activity across the basin despite national gains.
Why it matters: A flat rig count signals stable short-term development plans and consistent near-term royalty expectations for regional mineral owners.
Appalachian Natural Gas Hub Drops Below $1.50 Curtailment Threshold
Regional natural gas prices at the Tetco M-2 benchmark in Appalachia fell below $1.50 per MMBtu ahead of the typical autumn schedule. Major regional drillers including EQT Corporation have historically used that price floor as a trigger to curtail natural gas output. Lower regional hub pricing often leads producers to shut in wells temporarily until winter demand lifts market values.
Why it matters: Depressed natural gas prices can lower monthly royalty statements and lead drillers to curb output, delaying income for mineral owners across the state.
Natural Gas Futures Drop on Fading Demand Ahead of Shoulder Season
Natural gas futures recorded a weekly decline as cooling demand from the power sector tapered off. The transition toward the fall shoulder season muted market momentum despite stable LNG export demand and subdued national production levels.
Why it matters: Lower benchmark natural gas prices can directly lower monthly royalty payments and dampen regional operator leasing enthusiasm across West Virginia.
Regulators Issue Five New Shale Drilling Permits in West Virginia
State regulators approved five new shale drilling permits in West Virginia between late August and early September. Across the greater Appalachian basin, authorities issued 28 total permits covering Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The regional total represents a decline compared to previous weeks.
Why it matters: New drilling permits indicate active development and future royalty potential for mineral owners with interests in permitted production units.
EIA Forecasts Flat Appalachian Gas Output as Prices Stabilize
The Energy Information Administration released its September Short-Term Energy Outlook, projecting Henry Hub natural gas prices near $3.43 per MMBtu in 2026. Natural gas production across Appalachia is forecast to stay largely flat while southern basins drive national output growth. The steady price and production expectations point to disciplined regional drilling activity.
Why it matters: Flat regional production projections and stable gas prices suggest royalty revenues in West Virginia will remain steady without dramatic shifts in drilling activity.
Henry Hub gas $2.81/MMBtu (-2.4% on the week), WTI $97.26/bbl (+5.5%)
On Sep 9, 2026 Henry Hub natural gas settled at $2.81 per MMBtu, -2.4% versus a week earlier, +3.3% versus a month earlier and -9.9% year over year. WTI crude at Cushing was $97.26 per barrel, +5.5% on the week and +54.5% year over year. Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration daily spot prices.
Why it matters: Gas prices are close to last year's level, so royalty income should track recent months absent production changes.
