Companies ranked by wells completed in the period, with the permits they still hold. Pick a county to see who is active where you own minerals, then open an operator for its counties, formations, recent wells, and news. If a company sent you a lease, start here.
The survey has a completion record for the well in that year. Not necessarily producing today.
Permitted, not completed
The backlog. Some will be drilled soon, some never.
The regulator as operator
The state plugging orphaned wells under its own name. It is not a producer and does not lease.
Early access. Counts come from the state survey's well database, which records completion years and permitted status but not permit dates. Weekly regulator permit reports are a later source.
Completed means the survey has a completion record for the well in that year. A completed well is not necessarily producing today.
Permitted, not yet completed is the backlog: wells the regulator has permitted that the survey has not yet recorded as completed. Some will be drilled soon, some never.
The regulator as operator appears when the state plugs orphaned wells under its own name. It is not a producer and does not lease.
Activity is not value. An active operator in your county raises the odds of a lease or offer, not the price. Compare any proposal to what the records show.
Questions owners ask
An operator on this list sent me a lease. Does that mean they want to drill my tract?
It means they are assembling acreage somewhere nearby. Check which district their recent wells are in on the operator page, then read the lease guide before signing anything.
Why is a company I know missing?
The survey records the operator named on the permit, which can be a subsidiary or an earlier name. Search the operator page list for the subsidiary, or tell us and we add the alias.
How current is this?
The survey updates its database from state permit and completion records on its own schedule, and this site re-reads it daily. The current year is always partial.
WV Geological and Economic Survey, oil and gas well database Public ArcGIS service keyed by API number. The survey states it does not guarantee accuracy or completeness; completion years come from state records and permitted wells carry no date.
